Photobiomodulation
(PBM) Therapy
Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as low-level laser therapy, is a breakthrough in biological healing. It utilizes specific wavelengths of light to directly stimulate your cells, reducing pain, lowering inflammation, and accelerating tissue repair. At Collective Health Society in Centennial, CO, we integrate PBM into our surgical protocols and offer it as a standalone treatment to promote true, drug-free healing for our patients across the Denver Metro area.

Minutes or less is all it takes to apply light therapy and jumpstart recovery.
Healing at the Cellular Level
To understand PBM, we have to look closely at the cell—specifically, the mitochondria, known as the “powerhouse” of the cell. When biological tissues are stressed from surgery, injury, or inflammation, mitochondrial function is impaired.
PBM delivers targeted photons of light (typically in the red or near-infrared spectrum) directly to the tissue. An enzyme in the mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase absorbs this light. This interaction creates a cascade of biological benefits:
- Increased ATP Production: Cells get a massive energy boost to repair themselves faster.
- Reduced Oxidative Stress: Flushes out harmful free radicals that cause pain and swelling.
- Improved Circulation: Stimulates vasodilation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the site.
- Endorphin Release: Naturally blocks pain signals traveling to the brain.
This is dentistry working in perfect harmony with human biology.
Benefits of
PBM Therapy
Accelerated Recovery
Because PBM dramatically increases cellular energy, bone and soft tissues regenerate much faster. This significantly shortens the healing timeline after extractions or implant placements.
Drug-Free Pain Relief
PBM reduces the need for post-operative pain medication. It naturally suppresses inflammatory markers and blocks pain receptors, offering profound relief without systemic side effects.
Non-Invasive
The therapy is entirely painless. There is no heat, no cutting, and no vibration. Patients simply feel a relaxing warmth as the light energy permeates the tissues.
Applications in Our Practice
We seamlessly integrate PBM into our biological protocols to optimize your comfort and results.
Post-Surgical Healing
We finish every surgery (including extractions and implant placements) with PBM. It immediately jumpstarts bone and tissue healing, minimizes swelling, and drastically reduces post-op pain.
TMJ & Facial Pain
For patients suffering from jaw joint disorders or muscular facial pain, PBM acts as a profound therapeutic tool. It deeply relaxes the masseter muscles and reduces joint inflammation.
Vitality Therapy (Nerve Calming)
When working close to the nerve of a tooth (during deep fillings or pulp caps), we use PBM to calm the nerve and stimulate secondary dentin formation, helping prevent root canals.
Orthodontic Support
Tooth movement can cause soreness. PBM applied after aligner adjustments can significantly reduce the pain associated with biological tooth movement and potentially speed up bone remodeling.
Oral Lesions & Ulcers
PBM provides immediate, soothing relief for cold sores (HSV-1) and aphthous ulcers (canker sores). Treatment reduces pain and cuts the healing time in half.
On-Demand Relief
Experiencing general soreness, a stiff jaw, or unexpected tooth sensitivity? PBM is available by request as a quick, standalone therapy to provide you with immediate comfort.
The Healing
Process
Assessment & Integration
Whether requested standalone or included automatically at the end of a surgical procedure, we identify the exact target area requiring biostimulation.
Light Application
The specialized Fotona laser handpiece is hovered over or placed gently against the treatment area for a few minutes. You will feel nothing but a gentle, relaxing warmth.
Cellular Activation
Your cells begin absorbing the photons, accelerating ATP production and initiating the biological cascade that flushes out inflammatory markers.
Accelerated Recovery
You leave the chair with reduced pain and swelling. In the days following, your body will continue to heal at an advanced rate compared to traditional unassisted recovery.
